DOROTA

WHERE ARE YOU FROM / WHERE ARE YOU CURRENTLY BASED?

I am from Bratislava old town, and I am currently living in this city.

FIRSTLY I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU ABOUT THE BALIFORNIA SERIES. DID YOU GO DELIBERATELY FOR THIS EVENT OR DID YOU STUMBLE UPON THIS IN BALI?

I was in Indonesia visiting my friends, and I did not want to stay in a big city anymore, because I was living four months in Seoul before, there are 8 million people living there, my whole country is 5,5 million, so that’s why I was looking for something more peaceful, around nature and ocean. So I moved to one village on the west south in Bali. In this village I shared a house with Indonesian surf teacher, and I decided to stay there for 2 months. From 5 minutes from our home, I found out this cool skate park called Pretty Poison.

WHAT HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON YOU THERE?

You can find people all around the world, no matter if you are hindu, moslim or christian, black, yellow or white, everybody is living there as one community. That’s how I feel all countries should live like this during globalisation period, without any prejudice against each other. The atmosphere was amazing in this club, one Australian lady built a empty swimming pool for skating in the middle of the rice field. Firstly I felt like in movie of canadian woman director “Lords of dog town” documentary movie about skating from 70’s in California, that’s why I called all series Balifornia, because you can feel like in California.

WHERE DOES YOUR LOVE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY COME FROM?WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHY?

My love for photography comes from my love for art since my childhood. I guess it is also from my family background, my grandma was designer, my parents worked in theatre, my dad was director and my mum was actress, my brother is art director in animation, I used to dance and played piano, so that was the first things. My favourite thing about photography is the process, being at the place, being a part of that story you want to capture. My camera is often my free “entrance fee” so I can go anywhere and be a part of something. Moreover it also gives me feel to be creative, because I decide when I press a trigger and capture the moment, which is very subjective thing.

DO YOU ALREADY HAVE YOUR NEXT DESTINATION?

I am reading a book about Caucasus countries, and I knew just a few things about Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia before, so these countries are undiscovered for me. This year I got a chance to participate at the international art residency in Paris, that’s the city I have started to take pictures 9 years ago.

WHAT OTHER PASSIONS DO YOU HAVE? DO YOU ALSO SURF OR SKATE?

Actually I do not know anything about skating, I just adore people around this community, they are free, open minded, they know how to enjoy life, and that’s very inspirative for me. I have tried surfing couple of times when I was travelling in Brazil and Indonesia, but I am pretty bad in it. I always wanted to try new things, I am curious and active person, so even I am pretty bad at this sport I like to doing it and trying it, and I am stick to this rule also in other things, if you are enjoying it, that’s the most important thing, even if you are not good at it at first, just keep doing it, nobody should tell you what you should do or not do.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Everytime it is different, sometimes it is a book, movie, fine art I have seen, but mostly I get my inspiration from people I meet.

IF YOU COULD SHARE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WITH OTHER GIRLS, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Just follow your passion and work hard, do not waste your time with any job you do not like, go out there, explore and create. And remember that every problem you have will solve on it’s own, even if you do not know what to do, just leave it and take time, do not push on things. Help others with good intention and you get what you give, that's karma.

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL /DREAM?

My dream? I am trying to live one. So far it is not bad :) My goal is to accomplish my activistic photo projects in my country, there are currently two, one is about violence against women and the second is about transgender people in Slovakia. I want to show people
